Book Description.

In the summer of 1941, Cynthia Ashcroft and Gerald Hawthorne begin their marriage with everything before them—love, dreams, and a future in their hometown of San Rafael, California. But war is closing in.

Determined to choose his own path before the draft chooses it for him, Gerald enlists in the Army. What he believes will be a brief military obligation soon carries him across the Pacific to the Philippine Islands—and into the chaos that follows the attack on Pearl Harbor. Captured by the Japanese, Gerald faces a brutal fight for survival as he is forced onto the Bataan Death March and sent to a prison camp where starvation, disease, and cruelty threaten to break him.

Back home, Cynthia takes a welding job at Mare Island Shipyard, doing her part for the war effort while clinging to the hope that Gerald will return to her. But as terrifying stories of American prisoners reach the shipyard, hope becomes harder to hold, and the future she once imagined begins to feel painfully out of reach.
