Book Description.

In the summer of 1941, Norma MacGyver and Wayne Morris are ready to begin their lives together. High-school sweethearts with a wedding on the horizon, they believe nothing can come between them—until the war looms ever closer.

Determined to serve on his own terms before he’s drafted, Wayne postpones their wedding and enlists in the Navy. While Norma remains home, clinging to their promise to marry after the war, Wayne is assigned to the USS Richmond. The hardships of wartime service, especially the brutal isolation of the Aleutian Islands, test him in ways neither of them could have imagined.

Refusing to sit idle, Norma takes a job as a welder at Mare Island Shipyard, doing her part for the war effort while waiting for Wayne’s letters. At first, their words keep their love alive across the ocean. But when Wayne’s letters drop off, Norma fears the man she loves may have forgotten her.

Lonely, hurt, and uncertain of the future, Norma finds herself drawn to the attention of a handsome Marine stationed at the shipyard. Yet with peace on the horizon, she must decide whether the love she and Wayne once shared can survive distance, silence, and the sacrifices of war. Will they find their way back to one another—or has the war changed them too much to keep the promises they made before it began?
